Infertility Q & A

What are common causes of infertility?

Infertility can result from a variety of factors. While some may be environmental, the most common causes have to do with your physical and reproductive health. A few of the most common causes can include:

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Poor nutrition
  • Structural abnormalities of the reproductive system
  • The use of certain types of medication

Dr. Adams specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility and its many causes. He can perform a thorough examination and various tests to discover the cause of the problem and create a treatment plan that offers them an opportunity to conceive if that's a possibility.

Can hormone replacement therapy reverse infertility?

Infertility is sometimes caused by an imbalance in your hormone levels. If this is the case, Dr. Adam can evaluate your needs and prescribe a hormone replacement therapy option that will help to bring the hormones back into more normal range.

This goal can take a few months to accomplish, but once the hormone levels are back in balance, your ovaries will be able to release eggs normally. Although hormone replacement therapy will help to keep the levels in balance, they’ll falter once the therapy is stopped unless Dr. Adams can find the cause. As such, he’ll monitor your hormone levels to uncover what’s causing the hormones to go out of balance, so he can devise a truly effective treatment plan.

How does obesity affect a woman's ability to conceive?

Women who carry an excessive amount of weight may experience infertility if the excess tissue puts pressure on the ovaries and uterus. Being overweight can also cause abnormalities with blood sugar levels and the release of other hormones throughout your body. Each hormone acts with others to maintain balance in the body. If even one is out of balance, it can cause every body process to be slightly altered.

Dr. Adams can check your hormone levels to see if they’re out of balance. If you're is serious about conceiving a child, he may recommend losing a specific amount of weight in an attempt to bring your body back into balance so that it functions efficiently.
